Hello 8th graders!
I hope everyone is having an amazing summer so far. I have been enjoying the beautiful weather and doing lots of reading (especially on the beach!). Right now, I am currently reading Blink Once, by Cylin Busby. If you remember, this book was on the Isinglass Teen Read list last year.
The book is about a boy named West who is in the hospital after a bike accident. He is paralyzed and can't speak. He meets a girl in the hospital named Olivia and she begins to visit him regularly. His only response to her is by blinking (hence the title). They begin to form this relationship and West realizes that he is starting to have feelings for Olivia; however he is going into surgery soon and there is a small percent that he might not make it. The book is told in 1st person point of view, so we can really hear what West is feeling. He is aware of everything that is going on around him, but he can't talk. I can't imagine being in that situation! I am almost at the end of the book and can't wait to find out what happens next.
The most memorable quotation I have found comes on page 125 when Olivia is talking to West. She says,
"The things that happened to us, to both of us, changed who we are, but- maybe we're not that different from how we used to be right?"
This is the part of the book where West starts to fall for Olivia. He realizes that even though he can't speak, she truly cares for him. Even though they are both in the hospital, they are still the same people. This also keeps West's optimism up that in that he will eventually heal and get out. West still does not know why Olivia is in the hospital. This is where the mystery part of the book comes in.
Also, congratulations to Cam Plona and Travis Golden for being the first two people to send me their summer reading assignments!
