Loot

"I'd rather calculate the odds and take the risk than wait for fate to fall out of the sky."
The point where this sentence was stated in the book, was when March, the main character was thinking to himself about how he was going to get himself and his sister out of the foster home they had been placed in. Being orphans, they had nowhere to go and March didn't know what was going to happen. He had to make a plan. So instead of hoping for fate to do all the work he thought, "I'd rather calculate the odds and take the risk than wait for fate to fall out of the sky." This has a very important message saying that you can't always rely on destiny to get you where you want to be. You have to push yourself and take chances rather than expect fate to take over and make something happen for you. Fate and working for something go hand in hand. If you really want it, you have to try your hardest. Fate may help you along the way, but you can never be sure of your destiny.
