Looking down at the floor, Arthur said in a barely audible voice, "it was because of his hat, your Honor."

This particular quote is important and memorable because the main character, Arthur Owens, has thrown a brick at an old man and has sent himself to court. While in the court room, the judge asks Arthur why he threw the brick at the man. He then replies saying it was because of his hat. That hat was his dads before he died, so he throws the brick in sudden rage showing the reader how much that hat, and his dad, meant to him.
