This quote is important because Matt is explaining to one of his sisters, Emmy, that fear is your friend. It can warn you of danger and it gives your signs of when you need to act or save yourself. This advice is important for them because their mother is abusing and they need to know when to protect themselves. Fear is important, especially because of the state him and his sisters are in. So, fear is an instinct that can help him and his sisters survive the brutal abuse their mother gives them.
