Hello 8th graders! I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer. I can't believe it is already August! I have been having a great time relaxing, going to the beach, and spending time with my new puppy Roxy. I have also read many great books so far this summer. Here are a few of them...

I have to say, my favorite book so far this summer has been Some Kind Of Courage by Dan Gemeinhart. The main character, Joseph has a very tough life. He lost his mother and sister to a sickness and his father died in an accident. The only thing that gets him by is his pony named Sarah, but she gets taken too. Joseph decides that he is going to get her back no matter what and he faces many challenges on his way. This book was extremely powerful even though it was a fairly quick read. It started off pretty sad, but picked up as soon as Joseph met a friend named Ah-Kee. While traveling, Joseph always remembered advice that his mother gave him. The following quote was one that I thought was very significant:
"Mama said that if someone's putting ugliness into the world, you can't be ugly back; you gotta put a little bit of sunshine in the world to even things out."
This quote made me think that about having a positive attitude and to ignore those around you that are being negative or putting "ugliness" into the world. Surround the world with happiness and try to be your best self.

Lastly, I wanted to give a big thumbs up to Gabrielle Hendershot for being the first person to complete their summer reading assignment :) I will continue to post your assignments as they come in, so keep them coming. Remember, all summer assignments are due by the first day of school. I'm excited to meet you all August 30th!
