"It was raining so hard the day Betty disappeared that Andy never imagined she'd be anywhere but school or home. When I asked him, he said he didn't think she would have gone down to the smokehouse alone. But she was the one who had the idea to devil Toby and drive him away." p.180
This quote takes place during the rising action of the story and is quite close to the climax. Andy said that Betty planned to drive Toby out of his shack. Toby is thought to be the kidnapper of Betty when both Betty and him go missing. When the police go over to Toby's shack, he is not there, but they find a bloody wire inside. This is important to the story because earlier in the book, James, the brother of the main character is cut on the forehead by some wires on his way home from school. The main character Annabelle, has been hiding Toby from the police and suspects that Betty did go down to the shack and left the wire there proving Toby to be innocent.
